Language is a system of international communication through sound, gestures or

symbols that are understandable to others. It is also a human speech, written symbols or any

means of communication. This is the most remarkable cognitive achievement acquisition of

language in children.

This unit is intended for all individuals who work and interact with young children. It covers the

main theories of personality development and also illustrates how the knowledge from these

theories is applicable in real-life situations. Learners in this unit will not only be well equipped

to work with young children but they will also acquire vital information on personality

development.

The unit examines the nature and scope of psychology as a foundation for understanding human

development. Learning theories relevant to ECDE and their contributions on how children learn

are discussed. In addition, key concepts in psychology such as intelligence, memory, motivation,

concept formation, sensation, perception, attitudes, emotions and factors influencing learning

have been also highlighted.

The unit aims at imparting learners with knowledge and skills on principles, leadership patterns

and group dynamics in a community as well roles played by different stakeholders in the holistic

development of children.

All children regardless of their race, social, economic status and religion have the rights which
must be safeguarded by those who care for them. For instance, caregivers, parents, teachers
and the government. It is only when the rights of children are safeguarded that one can realize
their full potential.

By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to explain the concepts of philosophy and sociology in relation to ECDE.

The unit aims at equipping the learner with knowledge on the origin and development of ECDE

program and the current status of ECDE in Kenya.

It also helps the trainee to acquire administrative and managerial skills necessary in the

implementation of the ECDE program.

It also aims at equipping the teacher trainee with the skills necessary in mobilizing stakeholders

on efficient administrative and management of ECDE centres

Purpose of Course

The purpose of this course is to introduce the foundation and approaches to ethics and the nature of ethical thinking in Christian theology, by considering biblical, traditional and contemporary perspectives in relation to ethical questions relevant in Africa today. Also students will be able to look at the dangers of negative ethnicity as a moral problem.

The significance of the family in discipleship of children, and the role of the church to equip families for this critical work will also be explored.

This course is designed to help students to be better informed in their choice of teaching materials in their children‘s ministries. Students will investigate what teaching materials are available locally and on-line, and evaluate these materials considering cost, cultural relevance, and biblical accuracy.

Students will learn principles of good leadership in the church and children‘s ministry projects to be effective in their children‘s ministries. Particular emphasis will be placed on the recruiting, training, and encouragement of volunteers in the church or ministry context.

Building on principles learned in African Family Systems (pre-requisite) students will develop their skills to deal with issues of conflict resolution, forgiveness, respect, understanding, and compassion which are necessary for the health of any family. Such skills will greatly enhance their ability to address issues such as child abuse, divorce and remarriage, and parent-child conflict.

Purpose of Course: To provide a social, developmental and cultural framework within which stages of human development and the identity of young people can be considered.


Purpose of Course: To enable students to understand the impact of HIV/AIDS in schools and local communities and to consider the response of young people and school communities. 

Course Objectives: For students to develop tools that will help them design wholistic and transformational discipleship programmes addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS in local churches and communities.


Purpose of Course: This unit aims to introduce an integrated approach to Old Testament studies which is centred on narrative and narrative themes. From this perspective historical, literary and theological issues will be considered with special reference to the literature relating to the period of the Conquest to the Babylonian Exile and how this part of the Bible’s teaching is relevant in our lives today.
