Language is a system of international communication through sound, gestures or

symbols that are understandable to others. It is also a human speech, written symbols or any

means of communication. This is the most remarkable cognitive achievement acquisition of

language in children.

This unit is intended for all individuals who work and interact with young children. It covers the

main theories of personality development and also illustrates how the knowledge from these

theories is applicable in real-life situations. Learners in this unit will not only be well equipped

to work with young children but they will also acquire vital information on personality

development.

The unit examines the nature and scope of psychology as a foundation for understanding human

development. Learning theories relevant to ECDE and their contributions on how children learn

are discussed. In addition, key concepts in psychology such as intelligence, memory, motivation,

concept formation, sensation, perception, attitudes, emotions and factors influencing learning

have been also highlighted.

The unit aims at imparting learners with knowledge and skills on principles, leadership patterns

and group dynamics in a community as well roles played by different stakeholders in the holistic

development of children.

All children regardless of their race, social, economic status and religion have the rights which
must be safeguarded by those who care for them. For instance, caregivers, parents, teachers
and the government. It is only when the rights of children are safeguarded that one can realize
their full potential.

By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to explain the concepts of philosophy and sociology in relation to ECDE.
-They will be able to compare the concepts of the child in an African and international concept.
-Learners will be able to State the historical development of ECDE in Kenya during the pre- and post independent.
- The Emerging Trends and issues affecting ECDE in Kenya.

By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to State the importance of Music and Movement among the ECDE children.
The teacher will also be able to explain terms used in Music and Movement.
